Pauline van der Rest was born in Brussels in August 2004. She started playing the violin at the age of 6 with Igor Tkatchouk, continuing her studies with him in 2016 as a Young Talent at the IMEP in Namur. Since 2020, she studies with Boris Garlitsky, and joined his class at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen in 2021.
She has successfully taken part in national and International competitions: She was awarded the first prizes in the Kocian competition in 2014 and the Concorso Postacchini in 2015. In 2018 she was awarded first prize in the Grumiaux competition, the Odesa International violin competition and the Classic Academy competition in Liège performing with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, where she was also awarded the audience prize. In 2019 Pauline took part in the the Honda competition winning the 1st prize and was awarded second prize in the Spohr competition in Weimar. This year she participated in the Montréal International competition, reaching semifinals aged 18.
Pauline has performed in prestigious halls such as Flagey and Bozar in Brussels, the Moscow International House of Music, invited by the Spivakov Foundation, and Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle just to name a few. She has played with various orchestras such as the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, the Royal Harmonic Orchestra of Guides, the Orchester des Orchesterzentrum Dortmund as well as the Grumiaux Ensemble.
Pauline followed masterclasses with Albert Markov, Dora Schwarzberg, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Boris Garlitsky and Leonidas Kavakos. She had the privilege of being selected by the latter to receive a scholarship in order to follow lessons with him in 2020 and 2021.
She has been studying at Kronberg Academy with Janine Jansen since 2023. Her studies are funded by the Ferdinand von Rom / Ludwig Heuse patronage.
