Mozart’s Serenata notturna opens the programme with radiant charm before Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 reveals its remarkable complexity. Beneath its wit, sarcasm and virtuoso brilliance lies music shaped by the pressures of political repression, yet undiminished in expressive power. With Martin Helmchen at the piano and Sergei Nakariakov on trumpet, this extraordinary work takes on a particular brilliance.
A world premiere brings the programme firmly into the present and highlights one of the festival’s central ideas: courage also means giving new music the space to emerge and looking ahead. Mozart, Shostakovich and the music of our own time meet here in a programme full of wit, imagination and unexpected perspectives.
