Thorsten Johanns

Thorsten Johanns was appointed professor of clarinet at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar. Before becoming principal clarinettist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne in 2002 at the age of 25, he was deputy principal clarinettist of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra for three years. From 2010 to 2014 he was professor of clarinet at the Conservatorium in Maastricht.

Thorsten Johanns regularly performs as a soloist and has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Semyon Bychkov, Eivind Aadland, Yutaka Sado, and Howard Griffiths, as well as with orchestras like the New York Philharmonic, the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin and Munich Philharmonics, and the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt.

His chamber music partners include Heinz Holliger, Sir András Schiff, and Moritz Eggert, as well as renowned string quartets such as Mandelring, Minetti, Auryn, and Quartetto di Cremona, as well as the young Aris Quartet and Ensemble Raro.
