GRENZGÄNGER

Friedrich Gulda never allowed himself to be confined to a single musical category. A celebrated classical pianist, he embraced jazz, improvisation and provocation – and in his Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra created a work that gleefully breaks down every stylistic boundary.

Virtuosic cello writing meets jazz, marches, Alpine sounds and the energy of a big band. At times playful and exuberant, at others lyrical, wild or almost theatrical, the work revels in its freedom – making it an ideal vehicle for Bruno Philippe and the hr-Bigband under the direction of Ed Partyka.

Selected works by Duke Ellington open the concert further towards the world of jazz. „Grenzgänger“ celebrates musicians who refuse to choose between different musical worlds, instead creating something entirely their own from the tension between them. A concert full of energy, wit and musical independence.
