FROM ISTANBUL WITH LOVE

Fazıl Say is one of the most distinctive artistic voices of our time. As both pianist and composer, he brings together classical virtuosity, Turkish musical culture, jazz and improvisation in a musical language unmistakably his own. At the same time, he embodies the courage to take a stand beyond the concert hall and to speak out for artistic freedom.

Together with Ensemble Les Essences under Önder Baloglu, he embarks on a musical journey between Istanbul and Europe. Önder Baloglu’s İstanbul Sarmanı tells the story of Istanbul’s golden tomcat, while Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 meets the Intermezzo from Johann Strauss’s Tausend und eine Nacht.

In his own Chamber Symphony, Fazıl Say brings these diverse influences together. The result is a programme poised between European traditions and Turkish musical culture, between past and present – vibrant, personal and charged with rhythmic energy.

A concert about cultural crossings and the ways in which different roots can give rise to a new and distinctive musical language.
