BACH UND VIELSTIMMIGKEIT
Since Johann Sebastian Bach, we have known that music at a funeral service need not always be tearful or in a minor key: his “Motetta à doi Cori bey Beerdigung des seel. Hrn. Prof. und Rectoris Ernesti,” entitled “Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf,” was heard in bright, spirited A major.
And when VOCES8 takes on Bach’s motets, we know that vocal perfection and stylistically assured music-making need not be opposites. We are delighted that “the Rolls-Royce among vocal ensembles” always brings its virtuoso power to the concert stage with breathtaking stage presence — yet always with British understatement.
